چکیده

A Case for Symbol Interdependency 2 Abstract Current directions in cognitive science suggest that language processing is either embodied or symbolic. Instead of posing the question whether language comprehension is embodied or symbolic, the question should be to what extent language comprehension is embodied and symbolic. The current study relies on the theoretical model that considers symbols as interdependent abstract systems of meaning occasionally grounded in the comprehenders " embodied experience of the world. Such a symbolic interdependency system would explain how symbolic representations are built onto embodied representations, would provide a convenient mnemonic support for language users and would explain why humans have and other species don " t have language. Statistical algorithms like Latent Semantic Analysis can be considered models of mechanisms behind symbol interdependency, able to reveal some of the embodied relations captured in language.

A test of the symbol interdependency hypothesis with both concrete and abstract stimuli

In Experiment 1, the symbol interdependency hypothesis was tested with both concrete and abstract stimuli. Symbolic (i.e., semantic neighbourhood distance) and embodied (i.e., iconicity) factors were manipulated in two tasks-one that tapped symbolic relations (i.e., semantic relatedness judgment) and another that tapped embodied relations (i.e., iconicity judgment). Results supported the symbol...

Over the last decades a divide seems to have emerged in the cognitive sciences between embodied and symbolic approaches to language understanding. Embodied approaches argue that language comprehension requires activation of our experiences with the world, whereas symbolic approaches argue that language comprehension relies on interdependencies of words. The current paper argues that language co...

Symbol Interdependency in Symbolic and Embodied Cognition

Whether computational algorithms such as latent semantic analysis (LSA) can both extract meaning from language and advance theories of human cognition has become a topic of debate in cognitive science, whereby accounts of symbolic cognition and embodied cognition are often contrasted. Albeit for different reasons, in both accounts the importance of statistical regularities in linguistic surface...

From Head to Toe: Embodiment Through Statistical Linguistic Frequencies

Recent literature in the cognitive sciences has demonstrated that cognition is fundamentally embodied. For instance, various studies have shown that semantic knowledge about the human body correlates with spatial body representations, suggesting that such knowledge is embodied in nature. An alternative explanation for this finding comes from the Symbol Interdependency Hypothesis, which argues t...
